Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Vol 1, 1867, p. 1066: "Donatus, Tiberius Claudius, we find prefixed to all the more completed editions of Virgil a life of the poet, in twenty five chapters bearing the title, "Tiberii Claudii Donati ad Tiberium Claudianu Maximum Donatianum filium de P. Virgilii Maronis Vita." Nothing whatsoever is known in regard to this Donatus...
Brill's New Pauly: "Ti. Claudius D. Author of a commentary on Virgil's Aeneid c. 400 AD, wrote an extensive, almost completely preserved commentary on Virgil's Aeneid, the Interpretationes Vergilianae, probably around AD 400. He identified the Aeneid as a rhetorical showpiece of the [2. 91-102] genus laudativum, as a praise of Augustus (p. 2,7-25 G.), and interpreted the literal meaning without resorting to allegoresis, which is why he had little influence in the Middle Ages. The commentary has just begun to be used as source for the literary standards of late antiquity regarding criticism and morality...." Pollmann, Karla (St. Andrews). Donatus." Brill's New Pauly.
