1867, p. 1066: "Donatus, Tiberius Claudius, we find prefixed to all the more completed
editions of Virgil a life of the poet, in twenty five chapters bearing the title, "Tiberii
Claudii Donati ad Tiberium Claudianu Maximum Donatianum filium de P. Virgilii Maronis Vita."

Aeneid c. 400 AD, wrote an extensive, almost completely preserved commentary on Virgil's
Aeneid, the Interpretationes Vergilianae, probably around AD 400. He identified the Aeneid as
a rhetorical showpiece of the [2. 91-102] genus laudativum, as a praise of Augustus (p. 2,7-25
G.), and interpreted the literal meaning without resorting to allegoresis, which is why he had
little influence in the Middle Ages. The commentary has just begun to be used as source for
