Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Vol 1, 1867, p. 997-999: "Diagoras, of Melos..He was a poet and philosopher, who throughout antiquity was regarded as an atheist....All that we know of his writings, and especially of his poems shews no trace of irreligion..."
Brill's New Pauly: "Diagoras, of Melos, lyric poet. Eusebius' dating of his creative period to between 482/1 and 468/7 probably refers to dates of birth, because D. wrote in the late 5th cent.: Aristophanes (Av. 1072ff., with scholia) reports of a trial, in which D. was condemned to death because of his godlessness and desecration of the mysteries. He is supposed to have written dithyrambs and a paean....." Diagoras." Brill's New Pauly. Antiquity volumes edited by: Hubert Cancik and Helmuth Schneider . Brill, 2009. Brill Online.
