Brill's New Pauly: "According to Philostratus, he was the ‘father’ of Sophistic (Philostr. VS 1,9,1), but according to Plato and the Suda, he was a rhetor (Pl. Grg. 449a
cf. Pl. Hp. mai. 282b: ‘The sophist of Leontini’)... Born c. 480, died c. 380 BC. The dates have been inferred from the only confirmed year of 427 BC, when G. led the legation of his city in order to plead for help from Athens against the neighbouring city of Syracuse ─ a role reserved for an older man. Furthermore, the sources agree that he lived to the age of 100. G. was Socrates' contemporary and is said to have still known the young Plato.... Two works have been transmitted: the Praise of Helena and the Defence of Palamedes...." from Narcy, Michel (Paris). "Gorgias." Brill's New Pauly. Antiquity volumes edited by: Hubert Cancik and
