Brill's New Pauly: "Born in Phrygian Hierapolis, E. was a slave in the house of the imperial freedman Epaphroditus in Rome. He studied philosophy under Musonius Rufus, whose practical approach and focus on ethics he adopted. After his manumission he taught philosophy in Rome until the general banishment of philosophers in the year 89. With his highly regarded school, attended by rich and powerful aristocrats, he then moved to Nicopolis on the other side of the Adriatic and taught there until his death. He left behind no writings but Flavius Arrianus ( Arrianus [2]), a Greek-writing Roman, took notes of his lectures and published a collection of ‘lectures’ (διατριβαί, diatribaí), the first four books of which are extant...."
