AD (each of the 10 bks. of his Onomastikón is preceded by a dedication to the emperor Commodus), pupil of Hadrianus ... (a pupil of Herodes Atticus). He assumed the chair of rhetoric in Athens (not before 178) following a competition with his rival, the Atticist Phrynichus. He was also famed for the beauty of his speech (cf. Philostr. VS 2,12)
